I can’t imagine a world without music. Reading, writing and music just go hand in hand. Oh, and walking too.
And music has a way of helping me to find the feeling of certain scenes or gives me inspiration to see how a song – the words, the emotion – can be written into a scene.
I always have playlists for my protagonist and in this post you can read about Luke Conway’s playlist.
Songs to help me capture characters or scenes will depend on the theme of the story I’m writing or even the setting.
If I was writing a novel that revolved around summer I might have the following playing on my iPod:
All Summer Long – Kid Rock
Beautiful Day – U2
Summertime Sadness – Lana Del Rey
The Boys of Summer – Don Henley
California – Phantom Planet
California – U2
Cool for the Summer – Demi Lavato
In the Summertime – Thirsty Merc
Listening to music definitely helps me get into my story more and bring my characters to life.
Do you compile playlists to get you in the mood to write?
Yes I do! Though they are mostly OST’s or 2hr+ relaxing music on Youtube. My current favorite is one that has all the soft and relaxing songs from the Game of Thrones soundtrack. I write fantasy, so it really helps to get me in the mood:)
Thanks for stopping by – I’ll go check out GOT – might be good to use for some of the slower scenes.
