What happened on Day 6?

Today I focused on the all important ‘show don’t tell’ rule as it relates to emotion.

There are heaps of great web articles available on showing and not telling. One of my favourites is from shesnovel  Balance the show, don’t tell rule.

I summarised all the information I had on showing and not telling onto one Post-it note so I could refer to it as I was editing my chapters.

This is what is on my Post-It note:

Make the emotions do something to the character (show the emotion).

Make the emotion the subject of an active verb instead of just an adjective.

Visualise the emotion being experienced.

These three tips have helped me describe emotions, which draws you much more into the story so you’re right there feeling it with the characters.
